Children's PatternMessage Center Wall Hanging or Banner
|

Cute and practical! Your child maintains privacy while receiving messages. Just leave
a note (or treat) in the pocket. The pocket can hold a small tablet, pen and other small items.
Applique the pieces, then trim with fabric paints. They are both the same size. The country girl
message center hangs as a banner; the dinosaur center hangs as a wall hanging (hanging sleeve on back).
Each measures 14.5" x 14.5".

Supplies

NOTE ABOUT LETTERS: The letters are backwards to allow you to trace them onto the paper side of the fusible web after you've ironed it to the wrong side of
the fabric. When you cut out the letters and turn them over, they will be right side up.

Pre-wash your fabric (if you plan to wash the wallhanging in the future, pre-washing now prevents shrinkage later). These quantities assume a width of 42" - 45" for the fabric bolt. Use cotton prints or solids depending on the look you want.

COUNTRY GIRL BANNER
Fabric
Front, back, hanging strips, and pocket lining: ½ yard solid
Pocket: ¼ yard print (or scraps to make two 1.5" x 6.5" strips for borders, and two 4.5" x 4.5" squares for center diamond)
and ¼ yard solid for pocket (or enough to make two 4.5" x 4.5" squares)
APPLIQUE PIECES
Hair: 3" x 3" piece
Hat & Shoes: 6" x 3" piece
Dress Patch: 1" x 1" piece (can cut from pocket solid)
Face: 2" x 2" piece
Dress & Sleeves: 9" width x 5" ht piece
Letters: Each letter requires a 2" x 2" piece of fabric (some letters require a bit wider piece, such as the "w" - check the letters you will be using)
DINOSAUR WALLHANGING
Fabric
Front, back, center diamond of pocket, hanging sleeve: ½ yard print
Pocket: ¼ yard solid (or scraps to make two 1.5" x 6.5" strips for borders, and two 4.5" x 4.5" squares for pocket diamond)
Pocket lining: 6.5" x 6.5" piece
Binding: 1/8 yard fabric
APPLIQUE PIECES
Dinosaur: one 7" x 7" piece for dinosaur
Letters: Each letter requires a 2" x 2" piece of fabric (some letters require a bit wider piece, such as the "w" - check the letters you will be using)
Fabric Paints
Fine tip fabric paints of your choice. "Scribbles" or "Tulip" brands are good and can be purchased at craft stores such as Joann's.
Batting
One piece of 14.5" x 14.5" batting, felt or flannel for inside of wall hanging or banner.
Interfacing
One piece of 6.5" x 6.5" light weight interfacing for pocket
Fusible Web
1 yard of fusible web
Dowel
Small wood or metal dowel to hang banner or wallhanging.
Other Supplies
Quilter's Square & Quilter's Ruler
Straight Pins
Iron
Thread
Scissors: good sewing shears are a must. Thread cutters are very helpful also.

Cutting Mat, rotary cutter
All seams are ¼ inch
Cutting fabric
You may use your own large quilter's ruler, rotary cutter and mat to measure and cut out the pieces, or use another straight edge and scissors.
DO NOT cut out any appliqué pieces at this time. Cut the appliqué fabric pieces in the dimensions given above. For example: for each letter, cut out a 2" x 2" square of fabric - but do not cut out
the actual letters yet. The reason is that it is easier to cut out shapes after the fabric is adhered to the fusible web.
Fusible Web
NOTE: For appliqué pieces (pieces of country girl or dinosaur and letters), cut out fusible web in the same sizes as the fabric pieces. For example, for each letter, cut a 2" x 2" piece of fabric AND a 2" x 2" piece of fusible web. See the dimensions for appliqué pieces on the previous page.
