CAT BLOCK:

finished block measures 10.5" x 12.5"

Row A

Create the triangle squares as follows:

Cut the 5.5" squares on the diagonal. Re-arrange the triangles as shown in row A at right. Sew the background triangles to the cat fabric triangles as shown. Square down to 4.5". Piece together with one 4.5" square of background fabric on top, and one 4.5" square of cat fabric on the bottom.

Row B

Cut the 3.5" squares on the diagonal. Sew the background triangles to the cat fabric triangles as shown in Row B above. Square down to 2.5". Sew together with the 2.5" background square in the middle. Then sew that row to the 6.5" x 10.5" piece of cat fabric.

Sew row A to row B as shown on the right.

FISH BLOCK:

finished block measures 10.5" x 12.5"

Fish

First, you must make your tail square. Refer to the diagram below for illustrations. Cut the 5.5" squares on the diagonal (one of fish fabric and one of background fabric. Cut again on the diagonal - this time in the opposite direction. Each 5.5" square is now cut into fourths. Piece together as shown on next page. Stitch together into squares. Square down to 4.5". You will have two squares - enough for both fish.

Cut the 3.5" squares on the diagonal and piece together to make face of fish as shown below in the diagram on Fish Assembly, with triangle of fish fabric sewn to triangle of background fabric. Square down to 2.5".

Piece together pieces for the fish blocks as shown below, with the tail square on the left, sewn to a 2.5" x 4.5" fish fabric strip, sew to the face strip, sewn to a 2.5" x 4.5" strip of background fabric. This completes the fish. Sew the fish together with a 10.5" x 4.5" strip of background fabric on top and 10.5" x 4.5" strip of background fabric on the bottom.

PUPPY BLOCK:

finished block measures 14.5" x 12.5"

Row A

Top section:

You will need to first cut your 3.5" x 3.5" background and tail fabric pieces. Cut them on the diagonal and arrange as shown for Row A, top. Stitch them together and square down to 2.5". You will have one tail / background square. Sew the 2.5" tail square to a 2.5" background square as shown. Stitch that strip to a 6.5" x 4.5" background strip.

Lower section:

Create one 2.5" square divided diagonally of background fabric and puppy fabric for the upper leg. Sew that to a 2.5" x 2.5" square of puppy fabric.

This creates the lower leg's paw. Sew that strip on the left to a 2.5" x 4.5" strip of puppy fabric, and on the right to a 4.5" x 4.5" square of background fabric.

First you must create an ear. Cut one 3" x 5" piece from the background fabric and the puppy ear fabric. Cut them on the diagonal as shown above. Stitch together and square down the piece to 2.5" x 4.5". Stitch a 2.5" x 2.5" square of puppy ear fabric to the bottom. Sew that strip to a 2.5" x 6.5" strip of puppy fabric on the right, as shown.

Lower Leg:
Create one 2.5" x 2.5" square divided diagonally of background fabric and puppy fabric for the front upper leg. Sew together with a 2.5" x 2.5" square of background fabric as shown. Sew that strip to a 2.5" x 4.5" strip of puppy fabric on the right as shown.

Sew a strip of 4.5" x 2.5" puppy fabric in the center of the head and lower leg pieces.
