My Guest Room ChallengeMy father was a very talented artist. He presented me with a painting several years ago, and it hung in my guest room. I wanted to incorporate that painting into the new room design. I also liked the colors in the painting, so that set the new color scheme for the room. |
This photo shows the "before" decor. The wall color was a dark gold tone. The bed featured a quilt I made using a Laced Star quilt block. I loved the quilt, but decided to use it elsewhere. It was too "busy" for what I now had in mind. The curtains were heavy, and a rust brown color. I didn't have a proper bedside table, so had used a small table. It worked, but I now wanted a bedside table for each side of the bed. I wanted a lighter, brighter room, with nice bedside tables and lamps, and the new design had to fit in with my father's painting. I brought in my daughter, Aleah, to come up with the perfect design. |
The New PlanThe walls were painted a much lighter, off white color. My daughter removed the curtains, which created a lighter, cleaner feel to the room. She also brought in new, gray lamps for the bed tables. Adding ceramic cactus brought in green tones from my father's painting, and added "life" to the room. |
For bedside stands, my daughter chose unfinished furniture from Ikea. They were wood, and could be painted. The bedstand main areas were almost white, matching the room trim. The interior of the top of the stand was teal, matching the new bedspread. That particular shade of teal went very well with my father's painting. She added gold knobs, which tied in the frame of the painting. She also added charging stations for guests' phones (the cord fit up nicely into the upper part of the bed stand). For ease in painting, we decided to paint the pieces before assembly. |
The following photos show the new look. Although the room was beautiful, she was not finished.

Adding A PaintingThe room looked fabulous, but it still needed a splash of color. She asked me to create an abstract painting that spanned the width of the bed. I used some of the actual teal paint that had been used in the bedside table. That tied my painting to the tables as well as the bedspread. I also brought in beautiful shades of coral, blue and other spring tones, some of which were also in my father's painting. Adding just a bit of gray brought it together with the bedside lamps. The painting was just what the room needed! It added so much cheer, while not fighting with my father's beautiful painting. I used texture and a beautiful gloss sheen varnish to really set it off and bring out the colors. Creating home decor paintings has its own challenges. I consider colors, mood of the room, and existing features and decor of the room. To see more of my work, go to: ChristinaSherrodArt.com |
