Refinish Exterior Metal
Use Exterior Enamel To Restore Metal Artproduct review and instructionsproject by Kevin & Christina Sherrod Also see: Home Improvement Projects |
Weatherproof Your Outdoor Metal ArtThis beautiful metal grapevine was created for us as a gift from an artist friend. It has adorned our front courtyard for several years. Unfortunately, the weather had done some damage. The intense sun and heat had burned off paint in some areas. I knew I needed to repaint quickly, in order to protect the piece. The repainted piece is beautiful! All patterns, images and text © Christina Sherrod of CraftAndFabricLinks.com unless otherwise noted. The paint is formulated for creating pinstriping on cars. It is resistant to fading. Because it is used in the automotive industry, I knew it would be perfect for this job. paint brushes appropriate for use with oil based enamel sand paper and primer if needed for your project tack cloth if needed for your project wood cleaner (I used water and a biodegradable soap) gloves face mask (for protection against sand dust and fumes) goggles - for eye projection stir stick for stirring the paint drop cloths - to protect floor and other surfaces SAFETY PRECAUTIONSFollow all precautions and instructions listed on the paint can. Instructions1. Clean/ Sand / Prime The Art Piece Clean your art piece, removing all dust and loose paint. Sand as needed. We did not have any rusty areas; using a hose to wash off our piece was sufficient. The photo shows the piece cleaned and ready for painting. |
2. Paint Your Art Piece Work in a well ventilated area. Follow all instructions and safety precautions on the paint can, and wear all safety items listed on the can (such as eye protection, mask, gloves and protective clothing). Paint your art piece. I used clean brushes to put some paint of various colors onto a paper plate. I used paint from that plate. That way, I limited my exposure to paint fumes, and I did not get paints mixed between cans. Allow the piece to thoroughly dry; then flip the piece over to paint the back side if necessary. |
Paint Review The paint was very easy to use. It went down nicely and was dry to just a slight tackiness by the following morning (we live in a very arid climate). For full instructions and more complete review, please watch my video: Paint Exterior Metal. I am very happy with the results!
